Trade Barriers Need to Be Lifted

April 21st, 2008

During a meeting with visiting US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson at the Great Hall of the People before he concluded his two-day visit in preparation for the Sino-US Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED), Premier Wen Jiabao urged the US to consider lifting trade and investment barriers targeted at China so as to improve economic relations since Beijing’s measures to alleviate the imbalance in bilateral trade have yielded results.

Wen’s call comes when the US imposes curbs on exports of a number of hi-tech products to China to alleviate its trade deficit with the country. Meanwhile, the world economy is also set for a slow down this year due to the US subprime crisis. Confronted with such situations, Wen said both sides should deepen mutual understanding and cooperation to face the challenges together and push forward peace, stability and prosperity throughout the world.

Paulson in turn briefed Wen on the US economy, adding that mapping out energy and environmental cooperation is the right choice for the mutual benefits of both countries. He said that the successes of the SED also serve the interests of both nations and that the US attaches great importance to continuing the dialogue and would like to make joint efforts with China to boost the mechanism.
