On November 3rd, 2009, the biggest universal search engine Google Inc launched a Chinese language voice search service, which expected to attract users from domestic rival Baidu Inc in the world’s largest mobile market.

The new service is aimed to help Chinese users use Google’s existing search services like Web search and Google Maps via cell phones.

Till now the Chinese version voice search provided by Google can only be used for Nokia’s S60 series, which includes 46 models of handsets. But Vic Gundotra, Google’s engineering vice-president, claimed that the service will expanded to other platforms soon after, which include Apple Inc’s iPhone and Android-based handsets.

Lin Bin, deputy director of Google China Research Center said in a statement that mobile Internet era is coming; mobile phones will soon become as powerful as personal computers. However, since the kinds of mobile phones are limited, the searching on a mobile is extremely hard.

In 2008, English voice search service is provided by Google, which contains images and maps, for the handsets of Android, Nokia S60, Black-Berry and iPhone.

Google aimed to make its mobile search business surpass the PC-based Internet search business, said Lin.

During the past few years, Google made efforts to catch up with Chinese domestic leader Baidu Inc which flung the former as a second player in China’s online search engine market. Since 2009, Google has been popularizing its mobile search service vigorously in China, where the users of mobile phone are already passed 700 million.

According to figures from domestic research firm Analysis International, Baidu is still the market leader in China, which takes over 60 percent of the search market share. However, in China’s mobile search market, Google is a little bit in front of Baidu whose share reached 26 percent in the second quarter in 2009 while the former clinched 26.6 percent.

Chinese search engine Baidu claimed in October that it cooperated with China Unicom to provide wireless search for the carrier’s 3G mobile subscribers. On Friday, the popular iPhone was launched by China Unicom in China.

Experts predicted with the mobile phone users can surf the Internet via handsets, the mobile search is becoming one of the most attractive markets for search engines to expand their service beyond personal computers.

Due to China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), by the end of June, the number of China’s Internet users achieved to 338 million, while the mobile Internet users increased 32.1 percent to 155 million.

The vaccine producer Hualan Biological rose 2.47 percent to 57.7 yuan in Shenzhen on Oct 27 while Layn Natural Ingredients rose 2.93 percent to 44.94 yuan.

As Shenzhen Neptunus Bioengineering Co increased 9.24 percent to 15.85 yuan, Zhejiang CONBA Pharmaceutical Co LTD also increased 6.13 percent to 12.12 yuan. China Meheco Corporation closed at 20.98 yuan yesterday, 10 percent up.

The share market also goes well and the five companies’ shares hit the daily limits of 10 percent on Monday.

An industrial analyst Cai Jianjun pointed, the recent gain is mainly underpinned by government orders for vaccines.

China faced a grim situation in containing the disease as the number of cases has risen, said Health Minister Chen Zhu. As of Oct 26, china reported 35,664 H1N1 inflection with 3 deaths, and also in the US President Obama declared that H1N1 a national emergency on Oct 24.

Expert with the ministry of health’s expert panel Xi Xiuming, said there is no reason for any panic but alertness is needed.

Central government has also been massively buying the H1N1 vaccines. And Hualan said it won an order for 11.21 million doses of its flu vaccine from the central government. Beijing Tiantan said it has won an order for 3.02 million doses. Sinovac Biotech received an additional order of 5.19 million.

New York listed company also gained 7.61 percent to close at $8.06 apiese on Monday and all the doses must be delivered by Dec 12.

Cai said that he still feels that the boom in H1N1 vaccine stocks stems largely from speculation, but there are two domestic companies can benefit from the new orders which are Beijing and Tiantan.

Li Yingpeng, the analyst of Galaxy Securities said that this is not the first ever rally of the vaccine sector. Since the H1N1 outbreak in Mexico in March, the pharmaceutical shares have risen many times however, that does not completely reflect their true performance. However for those companies which have won the vaccine orders, there will be substantial improvement in balance sheet. For example, a single dose is priced at 20 yuan, Hualan’s latest order can earn 200 million yuan, which may bring about 100 million yuan of profits.

It is announced that in order to further industrial cooperation with Taiwan, Pingtan Island is to be set up as a special economic zone.

Nowadays, Pingtan Island, the fifth largest island in China, attracts the attention of experts from both sides of the straits. Considering its location, the experts are trying to found a new model for the island, which lies 28 km from the provincial capital Fuzhou and about 120 km from Taiwan.

In order to bring benefit for both sides as well as to create a series of preferential policies for Taiwan investors, Pingtan Island is considered to be built into a pioneering area regarding exchange and cooperation cross the strait.

On the same day, Chen Hua, Fujian’s deputy governor made a speech to the public. He stressed the importance of maintaining the island’s original appearance above all. He also confirmed the island’s specific status in enhancing cross-straits industrial cooperation based on its unique and strategic location.

According to Chen’s imagine, Pingtan Island will be equipped with a modern industrial system which is characteristic as well as mutually-beneficial. It will become a frontier platform for cross-straits cooperation in the near future.

The cultural and business ties between Fujian and Taiwan are inseparably close. There are over 10000 Taiwan businessmen and women who dwell in Fujian permanently.

Fujian is the ancestral home for more than 80 percent of Taiwanese. So it is hardly surprising that most Taiwan’s culture, beliefs and arts were inherited from Fujian.

There are direct cross-straits flights in Xiamen and Fuzhou airports, with Xiamen Airlines being the first mainland airline to have a subsidiary in Taiwan.

A manufacturing plant for laptops will be set up in Chongqing by global computer maker Hewlett Packard (HP) and contract manufacturer of electronic products, Foxconn International Holdings, which plan to jointly invest $3billion, marking the fifth move of HP’s development in Chongqing during the past three years.

The investment is made up of two projects, a laptop computer export base of HP’s and a manufacturing base of Foxconn’s. The former will order the latter to make production. Besides, Foxconn will also establish sales centers for its own electronic products in Chongqing.

According to the plan, the annual production of the plant in Chongqing will be 20 million laptops. And most of the output would be exported to the European market.

Chongqing will benefit greatly from this investment. The output value of the project is estimated to exceed 200 billion yuan, amounting to one-third of the total industrial output value of the city at present, according to the municipal government of Chongqing. At the same time, the investment is likely to expand Chongqing’s trade by four times, to $40 billion in future.

By the time when the plant goes on stream in 2012, the two projects would provide at least 50,000 jobs and the automobile sector which holds the biggest industry of the city currently would give way to the electronics and information industry.

As the fifth investment of HP’s in Chongqing following the investments in a software procurement base, a software-testing center, a call center and a manufacturing plant with an annual capacity of 4 million desktop computers, HP has moved its production center from Singapore to Chongqing.

And HP has reached a new agreement with Chongqing to allocate the majority of its new computer producing plants in the future.

HP’s Executive Vice-President Todd Bradley said it would continue to invest in the country, for China plays an important role in the company’s future development.

According to Vice-Mayor Huang Qifan, what attracts international companies like HP and Foxconn to invest in Chongqing is its low-cost labor, cheap raw materials and favorable tax policies.

Huang said several other international companies including Cisco Systems Inc are now also in contact with Chongqing for investment.

Microsoft, the software giant, said it will spend $1 billion on research and development (R&D) in China over the next three years, which is to ensure its long-term investment after the company’s anti-piracy policy that made many users in the country angry.

According to Zhang Yaqin, chairman of China Research and Development for Microsoft, the spending is mainly focused on staffing and resources for R&D, not including the $300 million spent on its new research centre in Beijing.

The investment plan was thought up by Simon Leung, the new chairman of the firm’s China operation, who was the former executive at Motorola Inc. This appointment and investment came when Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program, which turns a user’s screen black if installed software fails a validation test, has enraged many Chinese uses.

A Chinese lawyer even put forward a complaint with the Chinese government’s suggestion that Microsoft should be fined $1 billion for hacking into the computer systems of millions of users who have bought genuine software.

Leung said Microsoft would foster its cooperation with the Chinese government in the future and deny any challenges in the country.

Although China has brought Microsoft the world’s second largest PC market and helped them gain a dominant market share in China, but due to the problem of piracy of Microsoft’s system, it stems them form generating more revenue in future. The use of pirated software still remains high among individual consumers though the firm has convinced government organizations and PC vendors to use genuine software in recent years.

Microsoft has intensified its battle against piracy this year and has complained about it to the Chinese government. This has led to the detention of Hong Lei, who is the author of an enhanced pirated version of Microsoft Windows XP. The company also reduced its price of Office 2007 software from 699 to 199 yuan during National Day holiday as its promotional plan. However, the price is still too high for many Chinese consumers.

Microsoft will establish an executive management committee for China. Its membership includes Leung and Zhang, with Eugenio Beaufrand as well who is COO of Microsoft China, and the company’s vice-president Liu Fengming, who is responsible for legal issues. Zhang said it is the most comprehensive organization outside the US. It is to better coordinate its resources in China.

In 1995, Microsoft opened its first R&D centre in China. Now, the country is home to its largest R&D workforce outside the US. It has 1,500 full-time research employees and 1,500 working on project basis. According to what Microsoft said earlier, over the next three years, it would double its full-time employees to 3,000.

Microsoft invested approximately $280 million in its R&D activities in China last year. It is said that such investments have helped the company win the support from the Chinese government and stimulate its sales in the Chinese market.

Yahoo, the second-most-popular search engine, released in a statement that it received a joint proposal from Microsoft Corp and Carl Icahn on July 13. (The later is an activist investor who controls 69 million Yahoo shares.) And it was given less than 24 hours to accept it, which is “odd and opportunistic” as Chairman Roy Bostock said. It also said Microsoft and Icahn made clear they would not like to negotiate the fundamental terms, which include the immediate replacement of Yahoo’s board and removal of top management. “It is ludicrous to think that our board could accept such a proposal. We will not be bludgeoned into a transaction that is not in the best interests of our stockholders” Chairman Roy Bostock said in the statement.

Microsoft, which on May 3 withdrew an offer to buy Yahoo, made this latest proposal a few weeks before Yahoo’s annual meeting on August 1. Microsoft said last Monday it may renew talks for a deal if Icahn succeeds in ousting Yang and his board. Microsoft has been embroiled in on-again, off-again deal talks with Yahoo for six months. And it said it no longer wants to negotiate with Yang’s team.

The financial returns of the new proposal is not given a detailed statement, saying only that it was an improvement over an offer the software maker made in June but still carries less financial value and more risk than Yahoo’s current searching advertising deal with Google. But it added that Microsoft had again rejected its repeated offer to sell Yahoo for at least $33 per share. On that day Yahoo shares, climbing 1.3 percent this year closed at US$23.57 in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. Microsoft, which fell 20 cents to US$25.25 on Friday, has slipped 29 percent this year. But Yahoo had reported eight quarters of profit declines before Microsoft’s bid.

Yahoo said it was ironic that Icahn, who had previously urged the company not to sell its search business to Microsoft, was now supporting a proposal to do exactly that. And in the Wall Street Jouranal last week Yahoo’s CEO Jerry Yang accused Microsoft of wanting to disrupt the web search company. He also said it would be “a bad choice” for Yahoo shareholders to trust Icahn.

Bostock. Concerning this proposal Bostock said Microsoft not to engage with Yahoo’s management is “completely absurd and irresponsible”, “while this type of erratic and unpredictable behavior is consistent with what we have come to expect from Microsoft, we will not be bludgeoned into a transaction that is not in the best interests of our stockholders.”

As the release of the fortune 500 companies list, the Chinese people are amazingly to see that there are 35 companies on the list (including the enterprises headquartered in Hong Kong, and Taiwan). With sales of $159.26 billion, Sinopec led the Chinese group at the 16th place, followed by State Grid, ranking 24 and China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), 25. However, it’s easily to assert that the Chinese company, especially Chinese mainland company, the majority of those are state-owned companies and the business of them are concentrated on the realms of energy, financial and telecommunications.

US corporations occupied 153 places among the top 500, down from 162 a year ago, representing its worst performance in more than a decade. Japan had 64 firms on the list and France had 39, compared with Germany’s 37 and Britain’s 34. Moreover, there are 7 Indian companies also on the list.

Although we are glad to see that there are more and more Chinese firms emerging on the Fortune 500 list, but 19 out of the 35 listed companies are stated-own monopolized companies. Moreover, the business of those companies are relatively unitary.

After scanning the 2008 the Global Outsourcing Top 100, Accenture, Tata Consultancy Services and Hewlett-Packard are all ranked highly on the list. They are all worldwide joint-ventures, and their business is not limited by their major items. For instance, Tata is prominent enterprise located in Indian whose major business is iron and steel, and Hp’s laptops are shared a great reputation all over the world. But the outsourcing industry largely helps them to expand the scales of their business and make more profits for the head quarters, which contribute to the roaring revenues of the enterprises.

Infosys Technologies and Genpact are both the Top 100 Global Outsourcing companies and on the list of Fortune 500. On the contrary, most of the China mainland based companies haven’t put sufficient importance to the development of the outsourcing industry.

Outsourcing is subcontracting a process, such as product design or manufacturing, to a third-party company. The decision to outsource is often made in the interest of lowering firm costs, redirecting or conserving energy directed at the competencies of a particular business, or to make more efficient use of land, labor, capital, (information) technology and resources.

Above is the definition of the outsourcing. It is a trend for the world to concern about the development of outsourcing industry. In addition, there’re more and more large-sized firms to start to run the outsourcing business in order to obtain more benefits from the competitive global market.

Owing to the great progress made by Indian companies, Chinese companies should reconsider their market strategy and try to build the business on outsourcing.

In spite of the unfolding global credit crisis and soaring energy prices, auto sales in China maintained double-digit growth since the beginning of the year. Passenger car sales rose 17.84% year-on-year in the first four months of 2008.

According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), sales reached 2.46 million cars, including 1.81 million sedans, 75,500 mini-vans and 141,300 sport-utility vehicles. And the figure for March was unusually large, showing the most rapid year-on-year growth in seven months.

Volkswagen AG’s two Chinese ventures — FAW Volkswagen and Shanghai Volkswagen — continued to top the sales list last month, as well as in the first four months. They are followed by the Detroit-based car maker’s venture with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp, Shanghai GM. And domestic auto producers sold 463,100 sedans in the first four months, accounting for a 25.46% share of the total sedan sales.

China, the world’s second-largest car market, produced 8.88 million automobiles last year, of which 8.79 million were sold. And this year, auto sales are anticipated to exceed 10 million units, which stand for a 14% full-year sales growth.
