Revamp the dairy industry in China
Due to the series consequences of milk food, a comprehensive nationwide test of dairy products has started and steps are taken to reform the entire dairy sector.
This was decided at an executive meeting of the State Council, the country’s cabinet, in response to the milk food contamination that has killed three infants and left about 6,224 with kidney stones or other urinary problems.
Premier Wen Jiabao presided the meeting and said the contaminated milk food of Sanlu and other dairy firms reflected the chaotic condition in the industry and the loopholes in the supervision and management.
The scandal and consequences must be dealt with properly, the meeting said. And we have to improve the inspection and supervision system and strengthen the management of the dairy industry.
The other decisions are as follows:
■ Providing the best and free medical care to children suffering the consequences of contaminated milk food;
■ Seizing and destroying all sub-standard products;
■ Posting inspectors on site to supervise dairy firms’ production process;
■ Revising regulations on supervision and management of the industry;
■ Subsidizing dairy farmers and encouraging enterprises with better quality products to raise their outputs; and
■ Finding the guilty in the scandal and punishing them.
