A 5-billion-yuan contract signed between COMAC and GECAS

November 11th, 2008

A 5-billion-yuan contract was signed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) to sell 25 ARJ21-700 regional jets to GE Commercials Aviation Services (GECAS) on November 4, which marked that China’s first homegrown jet would have a promising future in the overseas market.

Zhang Qingwei, board chairman of COMAC, said that the delivery will start in 2013 and the 70-90 seat feeder jet will have its first flight in mid-November.

He said the regional jet will receive certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration in 2010. Four planes will be used for test flights before commercial service begins.

Zhang also said, “This is the biggest foreign order China has ever got and it marks the first time that the country’s domestically developed and produced commercial jet enters the US market.”

GECAS, a leading global player in commercial aircraft leasing and finance, will lease the 25 jets to “a global client, or a Chinese and even European client,” said Roger Deager, vice-president of GECAS.

The ARJ21 has received 181 orders from domestic carriers. The largest single deal for 100 ARJ21 jets was signed with Shenzhen Airlines in 2007.

Based on a report issued by the Aviation Industry Corp of China on November 4, in the next 20 years, China will need 993 regional airplanes.
