China and the US agree to collaborate on food security

China and the United States reached an agreement last Friday that make their joint efforts to tackle emergencies on food security and product safety, which was included in a document outlining the results of the two-day fifth round of the Sino-US Strategy Economic Dialogue (SED).

According to the agreement, the two countries will evaluate the realization of the existing contract and briefly introduce their progress of their projects respectively. China’s opinion on the implementation of the US Consumer Product safety Improvement Act of 2008 will also be considered by the US Consumer Product safety Commission.

The two countries also expressed their common wish to realize an agreement on food stuffs, including a memorandum of understanding on food security information exchange. They also agreed to join in the activities of world organizations for animal health, the international Plant Protection Convention and the codex Alimentarius Commission.

China and the United States also build a Chinese herbal medicine cooperation committee and reached an agreement on the first section of the collaboration project. The working group will also take setting up substitutes for endangered animals used in traditional herbal medicine as a discussing topic.

The SED was firstly launched by President Hu Jintao and President George W. Bush in 2006. During this round of high-level economic dialogue which ended on Friday, the US delegation was comprised of several senior officials from the secretaries of agriculture, labor, health and the environment, etc, led by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. They have concluded an agreement on the financial turbulence as well as the critical issues of the two economies.
