Less money at hand—French had to tighten their holiday budgets
According to a survey from Paris, under the pressure of world economic crisis, many French families had to pay special attention to their budget in planning their summer holidays, previous luxurious plans like spending the holiday on the beach would, perhaps, be crossed out.
Given the survey by Opinion Way polling firm, only 62% of the French had holiday plans, compared with 73% the year before. Furthermore, 21% of the interviewed said they were not sure of their ability to afford a holiday, while the figure in the year before only comprised 14%. Besides, 77% said they had less money to spend on holiday than the previous year, in particular, a quarter of them said they were going to spend less than 250 euro for each person for the trip.
A considerable amount of holiday entitlements are given to French workers every year, allowing them to have a full month holiday in summer. Therefore, most places in France are comparatively quiet and the tempo of life slower, for workers go out to spend their holidays, leaving many shops and businesses closed for several weeks.
However, because of a cost-cutting measure, the French did not have the same amount of money as they had before. As a consequence, 38% of the French said they would spend the holiday at home with family members or friends, while the figure of the preceding year was 28%.
Another 23% of the interviewed said they would cut down the time of their vacation and 75% admitted that they were searching the Internet for some economic means which would enable them to spend less money on vacation. The survey was done from April 9 to 17, when 1082 people were interviewed.
