Science and technology avert financial crisis
Science and technology are key elements to determine China’s strength, President Hu Jintao said. And his points were proved by the strong resilience the high-tech economic zones have shown.
It is clearly showed that China’s hi-tech zones have been the places least influenced by the economic slowdown.
Base on the data, economic indexes rose steadily in 54 hi-tech industry development zones over the first three quarters of the year, with some achieving more than 20 percent growth.
According to Wang Gang, Minister of Science and Technology, some of zones which are located in central and western China, and in the Pearl River Delta even got growth of more than 30%.
Those zones have been a pillar for the country’s economic development, Wang added.
Wang said that the Torch Plan, which started in 1998, has helped a lot to upgrade traditional industries and aid the surging Internet industry in the past decades.
As part of the Torch Plan, small firm in 31 regions have got the funds from the government. By the end of last year, more than 40,000 companies have benefited from the plan.
Since science and technology are playing such an important role in China, President Hu said at the conference that more effort should be made to turn China into an “innovation-oriented country”.
He also urged scientists across the country to learn from innovative spirit of their predecessors and colleagues who pioneered the development of atomic and hydrogen bombs, satellites and manned space programs.
What is more, President Hu called on the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) to continue to make science and technology more attractive to the public, to encourage scientific innovation and to inspire respect from scientists around the world.
