Gulou—central district in Nanjing, promoting “headquarters economy”

Gulou, ranking fifth among the nation’s 35 major cities in the capacity to develop a headquarters economy, is attracting international company head offices which is the mode used increasingly across the country. In a bid to attract yet more companies, Gulou district has adjusted its economic and industrial structure.

Covering about one-tenth of Nanjing, Gulou accounts for nearly one-third of the city revenues, ranking first among the six urban districts. Attraction of studying abroad increases

A crowd of young people has been abroad to further their study since the first group of 30 Chinese schoolboys moved to the United States to study science and technology in 1872.

Based on the figures from the Ministry of Education, between 1978, the year China launched the policy of reform and opening up, and the end of 2007, more than 1.2 million Chinese students headed overseas to study, of whom 319,700 later came back home.

Global Crisis Brings Hard Time to Canton Fair

The financial turbulence has greatly affected China’s exports, and it lowered the expectations of China’s exporters as the country’s leading trade fair which is mainly known as the Canton Fair. The fair was opened yesterday. The autumn session of the biennial fair in Guangzhou is considered as the barometer of Chinese exports and imports, which will run till Nov 6, lasting for 15 days all together.

Shanghai port got more profit

Shanghai International Port (Group) Co, who operates the world’s second-busiest container harbor, said profit rose 23 percent last year as China’s trade growth boosted demand for sea transportation.

Net income rises to 3.64 billion yuan, or 0.17 yuan a share, from 2.97 billion yuan, or 0.14 yuan, a year earlier, announced by the company in a Shanghai Stock Exchange statement yesterday. Sales climbed to 16.3 billion yuan, up 27 percent.

Canada’s banking system ranks first

The world’s finest banking system is in Canada, tightly followed by Sweden, Luxemburg and Australia. This was revealed by a survey of the World Economic Forum as the world market was bewildered by financial crisis.

The longest cross-sea bridge

Software sector in China still has a long way to go
