According to several speakers at the First China Overseas Investment Fair on November 4, 2009, China’s tremendous overseas investment helps the global economy, especially the economies of developing countries to recover from the world’s financial crisis.

Chinese officials pressed for foreign countries to create a convenient and fair environment to make it easier for Chinese investors to continue to invest.

Comparing with the traditional big spenders, including the United States and European countries, who slowed their outbound investment, investment from China in overseas markets has increasing remarkably recently.

Zhang Xiaoqiang, vice-director of the National Development and Reform Commission, said despite the world’s financial crisis, China was still raising its overseas efforts. Many of China’s companies were active investors.

China’s overseas direct investment rose 190 percent in the third quarter during the same period last year. According to the statistics from the Ministry of Commerce, the investment reached to $32.87 billion for the first nine months.

Zhang added that growth has been a blessing for many countries recently.

Jon Huntsman, the US ambassador to China had the same opinion. He said that China’s investment was significant in improving and stimulating the world economy.

The US has benefited from the investments of other nations, Huntsman added. Throughout the 2003-to-2008 period, countries invested over $325 billion in some 4,300 projects in the US.

China was one of the nations whose investment in the US is fastest-growing, said Huntsman, with an annual growth rate in investment amount of 30% in 2004-2008 periods.

Taffere Tesfachew, chief of the Office of the Secretary-General under the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) said that China is one of the leading nations in stimulating the revival of developing economies by way of investment.

The figures from UNCTAD shows that in the year 2008, investment flowing out of the US declined by 18 percent to $312 billion, meanwhile flowing from EU nations fall by 30 percent to $837 billion. However, emerging economies, especially China, increased overseas investment, Tesfachew said.

He also said that nations and regional areas would benefit a lot from it, Africa and Asia in particular.

Some small islands in Caribbean like Grenada have great sunshine to grow plants and many other advantageous sectors to tap, F. Marcelle Gairy, Grenada’s ambassador to China, said. China has good technology to achieve their dreams.

She added it was win-win investment.

Mifzal Ahmed, advisor on investments for the Maldives’ Ministry of Economic Development, said China’s technology was cheaper, innovative and very practical.

Although the UNCTAD predicts that the investment outflows from Asia will slow down its speed this year, the organization still believes this region will still excel the rest of the world.

Tesfachew said outflows from China and India were the most prominent.

Around 30,000 people poured into the first job fair in the capital on February 6. They were anxious to wait in the long line for about half an hour in order to gain access to the new hall of the Agriculture Exhibition Center. Unfortunately, many of them were kept outside, even having a ticket in hand, because of the overcrowded hall.

At the same time, the job market will be patronized by more that 7 million college graduates. And about 9 million urban unemployed would be hit by the slim possibility of getting a job.

The job fair lasted for two days. And the candidates were scrambling for the 3,000 to 4,000 posts offered by about 300 employers.

“We can get from the look of the fair that the job market is doom now,” Li Shuyu, a fair organizer, said, “We have strengthened the security for the fair. Many job hunters were unwilling to leave the hall even after the fair closed at 4 pm because they wanted to have a few more words with their prospective employers.”

Since the global economic recession attacked the job hunters in its strength this year, the government would meet the toughest period in the first half of this year. For this, it has to prepare for almost 8 percent GDP growth against the double-digit increase in the years before. And the registered urban unemployment rate is expected to be kept at 4.6 percent this year, reaching the lowest point since 1980.

A large number of people outside Beijing could not resist the temptation of finding a job and were attracted to the two-day fair. “We came here in the belief that Beijing would offer more opportunities,” said a woman from Shandong province who was accompanying her daughter. “But we’ve found there are more job seekers here.”

The lady, with her daughter, is still staying in the hotel with the intention to attend more job fairs to be held in the weeks to come. She said that her daughter was under great burden, so she could not just let her hunt a job alone.

Job markets are not only the straw for people who are young, weak and fresh, but those with perfect capability. Chen Liuyu, the former vice-president of a container company, is the one in case. He quit shortly after the company launched a restructure plan as the result of the global financial crisis. He said in the first time he attended a job fair that he had always kept an open mind and he just wanted to figure out the fair that day. He was in full confidence that he would get an ideal job in no time with his 30 year experience.

As it was reported officially that about 20 million migrant workers had been driven out of career since many labor-intensive factories handling export business had slowed down resulting from the crisis.

Is there any better way to show off your business than adopt the latest in the field of lighting design and technology?

The Hong Kong International Lighting Fair gives buyers fashionable lighting products at the largest event of its kind in Asia. It is in its 10th year now. There were 1,344 exhibitors coming from 31 countries and regions showed off their wares took part in the 2007 year’s edition.

It’s obvious that it is very attractive as visitors can easily navigate this vast resource of new lighting products such as product zones representing emerging trends in the consumer market.

Adding to the brilliance of the 2008 fair will be the 2nd Hong Kong Lighting Design Competition. The competition once again fosters bright new talent for the industry with a design theme “The Power of Light”.

It will also offer buyers many opportunities to network with international peers at social gatherings, as well as to update their knowledge of trends and markets.

The International Furniture Fair of Hong Kong
From October 28 to 31, the third edition of the Hong Kong International Furniture Fair takes place at Asia-World-Expo in Hong Kong. It is expected to host over 170 exhibitors all over the world.

Major exhibitors are confident with the fair. If you missed the chance to visit other furniture fairs in Hong Kong, this fair is your 2008’s last opportunity to search design-focused, brand-name furniture.

Sports Source Asia
It is time to plan a visit to Sports Source Asia (SSA) 2008 from October 28 to 31 for those committed to making their business the best it can be.

With its program of business and social, networking and information events, the fair is crafted to promote business contacts for sourcing, licensing, franchising, partnership or other corporate deals.

Exhibitors are ready to showcase their wide range of products in this year.

Ispo group endorses and supports SSA. It is the organizer of leading professional trade shows for sporting goods and sports fashion worldwide.

The financial turbulence has greatly affected China’s exports, and it lowered the expectations of China’s exporters as the country’s leading trade fair which is mainly known as the Canton Fair. The fair was opened yesterday. The autumn session of the biennial fair in Guangzhou is considered as the barometer of Chinese exports and imports, which will run till Nov 6, lasting for 15 days all together.

The number of booths this year is 53,000, 10,000 more than last time. Despite the encouraging changes, businessmen and analysts still have taken a cautious attitude toward China’s export prospects because of the global financial crisis, fluctuations in raw material prices, revaluation of the yuan, and a drop in consumption and other factors.

Buyers from US and Europe has greatly lessened this year, worse than that, US buyers do not want to attend such fair even in their own countries. Zhang Bin, a senior manager of the Qingdao-based company, said that the negative sides caused by the financial crisis would last at least one year. Changes also happened to Dubai-based Naghi Yasil, he said that because of uncertainties about the consumption market early next year and prices of raw materials and commodities, he may change his long-term deals into short- term ones.

According to the figures posted by the Ministry of Commerce, during the first three quarters of this year, China’s exports rose 22.3 percent to $1.07 trillion and imports increased 29 percent to $893.1 billion.

The growth of exports has shown an acceleration of 0.4 percentage points over the first half of the year, but is 4.8 percentage points lower than the same period last year.

“Although the export figures are not so discouraging,” Zhang Yansheng, director of the International Economic Research Institute of the National Development and Reform Commission, said, “But the country’s exporters arein a very difficult situation.”

Commerce officials are trying to boost the confidence of exporters. In addition, it is believed that China’s economy is still strong.

The biannual China Import and Export Fair has long been an event which attracts all traders.

The Canton Fair, as it is known, has been held every spring and autumn since 1957 in the southern city of Guangzhou.

The fair has become the bellwether of the nation’s foreign trade climate. People express their feeling “honoured” to be part of it.

In the early days, over 80 percent of China’s foreign trade deals were done with socialist countries led by the Soviet Union. But in the 1950s, Guangzhou was already the venue for entrepreneurs from Hong Kong, Macao and Southeast Asian countries looking to do business with the mainland.

Guangzhou has a good position to do export trade with the outside world, as it neighbours Hong Kong, from where goods can be transported to other parts of the world. That’s why the State Council, short of foreign exchange income at the time, made the city host of the first trade fair.

The first session brought 1,223 businesspeople from 19 countries. They made $18 million worth of deals. More than half of the goods at the fair were food products, textiles and crafts. Hong Kong and Macao bought over 80 percent of the goods, while Asian countries bought the rest.

The fair has changed a lot recent years, reflecting China’s emergence form a peripheral participant in global trade to one of the largest exporters. More buyers from the US and Europe began attending the fair in the late 1970s and 1980s at the beginning of the economic reform. In recent years, a more diversified export market has brought traders from Africa, India and the Middle East.

The fair has also mirrored a significant change in the nation’s trade environment, when it set up import booths for the first time at the 100th session in 2006.

The name of the event changed to the China Import and Export Fair, as the once cash-strapped country tried to reduce its trade surplus by buying more from other countries.

The largest trade and economic annual event in the city will be held at The Cotai Strip TM Convention and Exhibition Center at the Venetian Macau from October 23 to 26, said Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM).

The fair has contributed a lot to Macao in several aspects, such as investment, trade and cooperation with global business partners.

This year’s MIF will see a wider range of exhibiting pavilions, with the main displaying booths featuring companies from the mainland, European Union, and Portuguese-speaking countries. There will also be economic conferences and forums on cooperation in the convention and exhibition industry aiming to bring in visitors from various countries and regions.

It is said that IPIM would provide financial support to local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) for their participation in the 13th MIF. The exhibition will serve as a platform for SMEs to promote their products and seek investment opportunities.

In order to help more SMEs to get more opportunities through the MIF, the IPIM will grant each exhibition booth of nine sq m $725.

To attract more trade visitors, the fair organizer will work with countries and regions which have direct flights to Macao and invite them to this event. There are more details in the website, www.mif.com.mo
