There is an old warehouse along Suzhou Creek in Shanghai, things here go bump at night, decapitated ghouls and Nosferatu float around in creepy darkness. It’s a night full of shrieks in a house full of hair-raising, heart-throbbing creatures and gadgets.

They call it “Shanghai Nightmare”, which is the first American style haunted house in China; it has received more than 10,000 visitors over 5 weeks since it opened. Gan Quan which is the Co-founder of this said that it had received 800 guests every single day (day, night) which is also twice of the number they had expected and planned for.

Last Saturday, things had gone bump even outside the house and the ghouls could have flown under the open sky. But unfortunately, the planned Halloween party had to be cancelled out of safety concern, the 26-year-old Gan said.

This 107-year-old 500-sq-m haunted house has contained: ghouls, ghosts, a stomach-churning, “beheading room” and other props such as a jailhouse door and also all the scary gears to maintain a scary ambience.

As the light went out, the intrepid visitors were blanketed in darkness upon setting foot in the first corridor. And there were 13 horror walkways, starting with one on which a girl in a nightgown crawls across a darkened hallway. And then there were horror rooms full of rogue surgeons, dead teenagers and cockroaches on the walls.

Lin Li, a 19-year-student had been scared several times during the time in the dark room with all those bodies popping out everywhere. The whole idea is cool, especially the day before Halloween, Li said.

Gan said that this haunted house was unlike anything that people have seen in China. The house tells a story. It combines art, thrills and a touch of magic and it brings together some of the most stunning audio and visual effects in America.

China has its own tradition ghosts and ghouls, Gan, who grew up in the US, with his partner Charlie Xu saying that they built this Nightmare in Shanghai to give Chinese a real tastes of Halloween.

The Halloween House idea came from Gan’s visit in Shanghai in October in 2008 and he found the people of Shanghai are ready for it and it to have a promising market for Halloween parties.

Taobao, the biggest online commercial site, shows us the sales of the most popular Halloween prop, the pumpkin light, reached 100,000 last week and 2,000 masks were sold across the counter in two days in Shanghai. People turn to online shopping since Halloween goods and customers are usually difficult to find in stores, said one prop buyer, surnamed Zhang.

Also some Taobao shops promoted tombstone-shaped chocolates, vampire bats and spiders to meet consumers’ special needs during the last week of October.

Also Shanghai’s comic artists have been bitten by the Halloween bug. Young artists from Changning Folk Culture Centre were planning to organize a ghost-themed evening party of cross talk.

The vaccine producer Hualan Biological rose 2.47 percent to 57.7 yuan in Shenzhen on Oct 27 while Layn Natural Ingredients rose 2.93 percent to 44.94 yuan.

As Shenzhen Neptunus Bioengineering Co increased 9.24 percent to 15.85 yuan, Zhejiang CONBA Pharmaceutical Co LTD also increased 6.13 percent to 12.12 yuan. China Meheco Corporation closed at 20.98 yuan yesterday, 10 percent up.

The share market also goes well and the five companies’ shares hit the daily limits of 10 percent on Monday.

An industrial analyst Cai Jianjun pointed, the recent gain is mainly underpinned by government orders for vaccines.

China faced a grim situation in containing the disease as the number of cases has risen, said Health Minister Chen Zhu. As of Oct 26, china reported 35,664 H1N1 inflection with 3 deaths, and also in the US President Obama declared that H1N1 a national emergency on Oct 24.

Expert with the ministry of health’s expert panel Xi Xiuming, said there is no reason for any panic but alertness is needed.

Central government has also been massively buying the H1N1 vaccines. And Hualan said it won an order for 11.21 million doses of its flu vaccine from the central government. Beijing Tiantan said it has won an order for 3.02 million doses. Sinovac Biotech received an additional order of 5.19 million.

New York listed company also gained 7.61 percent to close at $8.06 apiese on Monday and all the doses must be delivered by Dec 12.

Cai said that he still feels that the boom in H1N1 vaccine stocks stems largely from speculation, but there are two domestic companies can benefit from the new orders which are Beijing and Tiantan.

Li Yingpeng, the analyst of Galaxy Securities said that this is not the first ever rally of the vaccine sector. Since the H1N1 outbreak in Mexico in March, the pharmaceutical shares have risen many times however, that does not completely reflect their true performance. However for those companies which have won the vaccine orders, there will be substantial improvement in balance sheet. For example, a single dose is priced at 20 yuan, Hualan’s latest order can earn 200 million yuan, which may bring about 100 million yuan of profits.

The China’s third largest port operator, Dalian Port Co Ltd expects to complete its initial public offering on the Shanghai Stock Exchange within the first half of 2010, Sun Hong, the Chairman of Dalian Port Co Ltd said.

The company was listed in Hong Kong in 2006 which means it will become China’s first port with a dual listing.

And also the Dalian Port is the biggest port operator in Bohai Bay which is located in the northeastern China; it focuses on container and crude oil.

The company said this month that it will issue no more than 1.2 billion A shares in Shanghai and no more than 1.2 billion shares to its parent (Dalian Port Co Ltd), expecting to raise a total of 2.8 billion yuan.

Currently the company is holding 3 billion shares and the holding of its parent will be reduced from 60 percent to 55 percent after the share issue.

The executive director of Dalian Port, Zhang Fengge said that assume 3.67 yuan per share as the offering price, and the asset acquisition earned 14 million yuan this year, the dilution effect to H shares may be offset and the earning per share will increaser 0.7 percent.

Funds raised earnings will be used for the construction of dock infrastructure and bulk cargo dock facilities, as well as bank repayment.

Sun also said that the port would increase capital expenditure next year to 3 billion yuan after an asset acquisition from its parent Dalian Port Co Ltd, up from 2 billion yuan this year. And after that asset acquisition, it would enjoy a big market share. And the net profit may rise to 140 million yuan.

Dalian Port accomplished throughput of 185 million tons, an 11.9-percent rise on the previous year, and an 18.1-percent rise in containers to 4.5 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs). More than 90 percent of trade containers in northeastern China move through the port to go abroad.

The port aims to boost throughput by 10percent next year from this year’s expected throughput. Its passenger roll-on, roll-off terminal experienced a 50-percent rise on both throughput and revenue in the first half year of 2009.

China port operators have been reporting gradually improving volumes after the deepest slump in global trade because of the economic slowdown.

There is still growth in cargo volumes last month compare to the year earlier, posted by China’s Yangtze River Delta. Cargo throughput at Shanghai rose 5.8 percent year on year to 33.28 million tons last month, according to Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG).

The Baltic Dry Index reached a seven-month high point this week, boosting optimism for port business in the fourth quarter and early next year.

Qingdao, another high rated port, is also gearing up for its IPO as the seventh largest port worldwide and first container transfer port in China.

Tian Guangwen, the vice-president of Qingdao port said that they have been preparing for year, he said that they ran for H shares at first but this year they restarted the application for A share listing and wish to go to the market as a whole.

He also said that it is good news for Dalian. Their IPO will not be for capital raising but for better development.

The new policy of Shanghai human resources and social security bureau says that after providing a feasible business plan, any Shanghai citizen under 35 can apply a one-year loan up to 100,000 Yuan ($14,630), which is guaranteed by the government.

An official with the bureau surnamed Zhang said that it was the first time the government was giving loan guarantees to business startups that covered a wide range.

Two years age there were only a small number of graduates could get the government loans in Shanghai.

The new policy consists of several full-round measures to help start-up business. However, entrepreneurs have to take the risks in the first 3 years, according to a notice from the bureau.

Compared with the earlier one-year qualified for loans policy, nowadays any Shanghai native who run a business less than 3 years can apply for start-up loans.

The loan amount could be as much as 100,000 yuan without collateral security and could be a maximum of 1 million with a guarantee.

The students, who graduate from a Shanghai university without residence permit, can also apply for the loans within 2 years of getting the degree. This policy aims to alleviate employment pressure of the 158,000 graduates in Shanghai this summer. It has been proved by the statistics from the bureau that a new business can provide 6 jobs on average.

In 2008, 7.4% of the working-age people in Shanghai had their own business, in addition, more people, account for about 10%, said they would try this if they could have an opportunity.

According to the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics, last year, workers in Beijing averagely earned 44,715 yuan, which is 4,848 yuan more, or a 12 percent increase than that in 2007.

Statistics of the Shanghai Municipal Statistics Bureau shows that last year, workers in Shanghai averagely earned 3,292 yuan a month, which is 400 yuan more or 13.8 percent increase than that in 2007.

Beijing’s statistics bureau also showed us a picture of different salary standards in different careers. Beijing’s statistics bureau has 138,000 units, including State-owned, private, foreign-funded and joint venture companies. Among which, stockbrokers earned most salary last year. Some top executives earned more than 1 million yuan last year.

People in financing, banking, maritime transport, air transport, insurance, tobacco, radio, TV, film and audio industries, made 100,000 yuan on average last year.

People in Telecommunications, computer service, and software industries earned 80,000 to 100,000 yuan on average last year. They are just below those financial workers.

However, the industries of clothing, footwear and headgear were the poorest industries for their workers earned less than 20,000 yuan on an average.

As salaries vary in different industries, they also diverse greatly in the same industry. The most dramatic difference can be show in the securities industry, whose annual incomes varies from less than 50,000 yuan to more than 1 million yuan.

Different opinions have been aroused by this data. Lin Nan, an employee of a Beijing-based exhibition firm said, “I first thought it was impossible that people’s salaries could vary so drastically. I did not get any raise in my salary last year.”

And he believed that this survey dose not show the real status because the interviewed people are only a small group of filthy rich employees showing a jump in everyone’s salary.

A secretary general of Shanghai Human Resources Consulting Association claimed that it is the Shanghai’s introduction of more international financial professionals last year that helped raise the level of salaries.

As he said, shanghai has been trying to attracting more top talents from around the world to develop more high-end sectors like consulting, financial and technology research. The effort made on optimizing the city’s industry structure is also a factor on increasing salaries.

In March 70% graduates had job offers, but the situation was really different now.

It is reported by Shanghai Foreign Service Co Ltd (SFSC) that since last fall more than 60% graduates have sent out more than 30 resumes. According to Wu Xiaohui, senior campus recruitment consultant with SFSC, graduates are forced by the financial crisis to make full use of every chance to get a job, because lots of companies do not intend to recruit.

In Shanghai, lots of graduates have regretted to lose chances to hand out their resume since last year. Now there are not really many chances for students to find an ideal job. After the Chinese Spring Festival, March is the peak season for fresh graduates to sign job contacts with employers, according to the survey by SFSC.

And another survey shows that more than half of multinational companies didn’t intend to recruit new employees in this tough time, while companies have recruitment plan are going to hire fewer employees.

However, 157 multinational corporations will offer 1000 vocational training opportunities 1,000 vocational training opportunities, 1,000 internship positions and 1,000 job openings for graduates.

Though it is difficult to find a good job this year, Yu Min does not feel anxious, for she has planed well.

The student from the shanghai University of science and Technology wanted to apply for the Shanghai World Expo volunteer program, which he believed would bring her “some experience to build necessary social skills” while getting involved in “such an exciting” event.

If she failed to find a satisfactory job this year, at least she could do something in this world-class event, which would benefit her in the future.

Yu is happy that the expo will give up its volunteer recruitment program in May this year. Now more than 1 million volunteers hope to be hired.

Chen Zhenmin, director of the shanghai World Expo Social Mobilization Office, said yesterday that while most volunteers would be hired from college students, this did not mean that other people would not be welcomed.

The Expo will last for 184 days, from May 1 to Oct 31. During these days, volunteers will serve 14 to 20 days on average. But authorities might extend the period because of passionate and enthusiastic response form the public.

Authorities said the expo would provide 2000 to 3000 jobs for college graduates this year. “A large number of people would be trained to communicate with foreigners, which will help the city in the future,” said Xu Weiguo, deputy Party chief of shanghai World Expo Coordination Bureau.

As the financial crisis gets closer to the workers’ daily life in Shanghai, the white collar and some gold-collar workers are like toast of the town, feel the pressure from all sectors.

A Shanghai white-collar worker of an American company told us his company has relieved 10 percent of the staff, and there would be more layoffs after the Chinese lunar New Year holidays. The unnamed employee also said that during every day’s work recently, his colleagues are talking about who will be the next one to leave the company.

The latest entrants to the jobless club Miss Xu who used to work in a foreign-funded real estate company as a human resource manager in Shanghai complained to us: " Our company has laid off staff since the middle of December and around 55 percent of the original staff lost their jobs in this financial crisis and I also get laid off with two months’ salary as termination pay.

According to the statistical data of Shanghai government shows that the country’s heavy reliance on export, labor-intensive industries creates a ripple-down effect and industries related to trading, finance and economics, It, communications, banking, consultancies, media firms etc are all facing cost cuts.

A white paper released in January by Shanghai Human Resources Consulting Association predicted that the first-half of 2009 would see negative growth in new positions at Shanghai’s foreign companies and privately-owned firms.

The white paper also shows that the 7000 foreign companies survive in Shanghai showed that 48 enterprises had already started feeling the effects of the crisis.

A total amount of 2,218 employees were laid off or 0.79 percent of the entire staff. And even worse the situation will not get better until the second-half.

With the cutting off of employees the employments dispute cases had jumped to 30 percent of all cases. To protect the legal rights of employees, Shanghai government had asked those enterprises which cut more than 20 jobs or more than 10 percent of the entire staff to file a report with the local trade union or notify all staff 30 days before the final decision. This requirement is also in keeping with state council’s recent guidelines.

This policy can help the workers secure their own benefits and show the responsibilities to the enterprises which are particularly valuable in the financial crisis. But also Shanghai government also knows that if the small-sized enterprises do not cut jobs they will soon or later out of business, so the government also provide a better business environment, free credit controls, and reduce business costs.

Miss Xu is stilling looking for a new job after having been cut for two months. She has to lower her salary expectations and increase his job search field in order to get a new job quickly. Meanwhile, information from the HR company shows that even in the crisis the enterprises are still looking for talent workers as always.

Shanghai, as is shown in a report by the iResearch Consulting Company, ranked the first among all the cities in China in the aspect of online shopping. It has spent an amount of 16.5 billion yuan, or $2.4 billion, online in 2008, with 2,200 yuan each person. The report was conducted recently through interviews with 100,000 Internet users all over the nation, and 84 major websites were taken advantage of as terraces.

The total amount of web shopping in 2008, 120 billion yuan, has risen to a new height and it was 128.5 percent higher than that in 2007.

Liu Zheng, senior consultant from Beijing-based SDR Consulting Company, showed his opinion that E-business had played an essential role in web shopping with strong impact even in such big cities as Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen, which were the representatives of the offline shopping world.

“Comparatively prosperous cities such as Shandong and Jiangsu are obvious to have turned to be the major areas of online shopping with users of Taobao.com in these areas taking up more than 70 percent of all in China,” he added.

It’s said that 55 percent of the online shoppers are male whose favorite goods to consume are electronic products.

For Xiaogao, a 27-year-old Shanghai dweller, shopping online was her first choice, even though there were several large shopping markets nearby. She believed that web shopping, as a new lifestyle, was coming into being, and she would at least shopped on the Internet once a week. She also gave another main reason for her choice – the favorable prices. “Web shopping serves as a kind of means that makes life easier by cutting the traffic fees,” she said, “I am forming a habit of shopping online and try to make larger expense.”

“There are an increasing number of people shopping online around the country who choose the Internet for the sake of the wide range of goods with great value and simple process to gain. And such online activity will not be stifled by the current economic downturn.” Liu Zheng added.

For the time being, Taobao.com maintains the top in web shopping for its overwhelming market shares which is 82.2 percent of all. And PAIPAI.com is ranked the second with 9.9 percent market shares, while eachnet.com the third with 7.9 percent.

However, the report said that there existed insufficiency in web shopping. The very ones that shoppers complained about most are the disparity between the picture and the object received, and also the back order.
